Working together means service

Working together means service

Peter ThobejaneThe rural community of Bapedi ba Mmafefe in the eastern part of Limpopo under the leadership of Kgosi Setlamorago Thobejane, the national chairperson of Contralesa, and his traditional councillors as well as the ward councillors have long held an annual general meeting (AGM) with the community every December.

This AGM evaluates progress with regards to development made in the previous 12 months, including assessing the annual school results, crime and so on.

The December 2008 meeting heard how a lot of rural development has been achieved by knocking at government’s door rather than waiting for government to come to them.

Through this method all households have been electrified. On previous occasions the community had realized that the traditional authority was not working together with the ward councillors.

This was impacting badly on service delivery. In the 2007 AGM, a resolution was taken that both the traditional authority and the ward councillors must work together to improve the quality of life of the community.
Through the involvement of the community the resolution was fully implemented and they started to be involved in public works programmes eg roads. The problem that faces the community now is the lack of clean water and this exposes them to health risks like cholera.

They said the matter needs both the councillors and the traditional authority to pay urgent attention.Through the health committee they will also make a submission with regards to the amendment of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in relation to asbestos which is threatening their lives.

In July 2009 there will be a meeting addressed by the mayor and ward councillors to give a progress report on the current projects and other achievements through IDP programmes.

In December 2009 there will be an AGM called by the traditional authority to get progress reports on finances and stock thefts. They will continue to knock at government’s door through the relevant structures for assistance in line with other priorities identified in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP).People at the meeting expressed their support for the ANC in the April elections because a lot had changed for them since 1994.
