NUMSA members to strike at Menzies Aviation

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) will be on strike at Menzies Aviation starting on Monday (15 July 2024). Workers at Menzies Aviation are fed up with the management because it refuses to convert workers who are on Permanent Hourly Pay (PHP) to Permanent Monthly Pay (PMP).

This situation has a direct and negative impact on workers because if you are on hourly pay, it means you can never be sick. Workers are paid for the hours they work and if they are sick or on leave for any reason, they do not get paid, and this has a direct impact on their source of income. There are many workers who force themselves to work, even when sick because they do not want to end up with lower pay.

NUMSA has been negotiating for Menzies workers to be converted to monthly workers in order to minimize fatigue. We are proposing that they work a minimum of 195 hours per month, but the company is proposing that they work 165 in all airports, except OR Tambo, where management is proposing 195 hours for workers at OR Tambo only. This proposal has been rejected because it is a divide and rule tactic because it means workers at OR Tambo will benefit, but other workers will not.

At the same time, we have received reports from some of our members who are complaining that management is attempting to intimidate them and stop them from participating in the strike. We want to warn the bosses at Menzies Aviation that a strike is a constitutional right and they have no right to try and bully them into stopping the strike.

Menzies Aviation deals with ramp and baggage handling. It also deals with checking in passengers before flights. Their clients include Safair, Qatar, Qantas and Cathay Pacific.

The strike will begin at 4AM on Monday morning and Menzies Aviation workers in Cape Town, East London, PE, King Shaka, and OR Tambo Airport will be participating.

The media is invited to the picket outside the company offices, details below:
