If you are a Numsa member or a member of staff and you have a dependant that wants to study at tertiary level, s/he can now apply to Numsa’s Mbuyiselo Ngwenda Bursary Fund. Applications close on July 31.

Areas of Study Covered By The Bursary

Mechanical Engineering

Involves the design, manufacture and maintenance of a large variety of equipment and machinery used throughout a corporation.

Electrical Engineering

Involves the design, manufacture, installation and management of various appliances and installations which utilize electrical energy.

Chemical Engineering/Metallurgical Engineering

Involves all aspects of metal and alloy technology, from the first treatment of newly mined, mineral bearing rock to the completed, ready to use product.

Information Technology

Involves the design of computer operated systems eg Human Resources information [data base], registration process, design of web pages, design of network operations ie intranet [business analysis] and software development.

B Com Accounting

Involves the preparation of financial statements, accounting systems, budgets, management information, cash flow and improving profitability of the company.

Who qualifies for these bursaries?The applicant must be a dependant of a Numsa Member or staff member.

What fields of study does the Fund cover?It covers undergraduate degrees or diplomas in the field of engineering, information technology and B Com within the Republic of South Africa.

What does the bursary cover?The bursary covers tuition fees, some accommodation and books. The amount granted will depend on the course of study that the student has enrolled for. Any shortfall will be for the account of the parent/student.

How much will the bursary provide?The bursary will provide up to a maximum of R36 000 for University Studies [Degree] and R28 000 for Technikon Studies [University of Technology – Diploma].

Students should first apply to a tertiary institution. Once accepted, they should attach proof of this to their bursary application form. The bursary will be for tertiary studies within the Republic of South Africa.

When can I apply?You can apply from May 1 every year. The closing date is July 31 every year.

Does the fact that I am a Numsa member guarantee that my child will get a bursary?No, there are a limited number of bursaries granted each year. Bursaries will be granted to the most talented and most deserving applicants. The bursary approval will be at the sole discretion of the Bursary Committee.

If my one child receives a bursary does that mean all my children will automatically get a bursary when they finish their secondary education?No, each and every child has to apply for the bursary a year before they complete their secondary education. Each applicant will be treated on merit.

For how many years will the bursary be available?The continuation of the bursary will be reviewed at the end of each academic year and will depend on the academic performance of the student.

What will happen if the student fails a year of his/her studies?The bursary will be suspended and the student will have to repeat the failed course at his/her expense.

What will happen if the student decides to discontinue with his/her studies after the bursary has been awarded?The parent/student will become liable for reimbursement of bursary monies for all the costs incurred since the bursary’s inception.
