Motor workers come out tops!

For the first time ever, motor workers have won the biggest increase across all Numsa’s sectors. At CPI-X + 2,7 % it means that workers will receive a real wage increase. (CPI-X is a figure that government uses to measure how prices are increasing. If you get a wage increase equal to the CPI-X increase, your standard of living will stay the same. If you get a wage increase more than the CPI-X, your standard of living will increase – you will get a real wage increase.)

And to make matters better, the agreement is a three-year agreement. No more waiting and waiting for the government to gazette your increase! From September 1, 2005 the agreement says that employers must increase the minimum wages by the equivalent of the June 2005 CPI-X plus 2%.

If the June CPI-X in 2005 is 4% or less then the increase will be 6%. If the CPI-X is more than 7% then the maximum percentage increase will be 9%.

Employers must use the same formula for the period September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2007 ,

These are the new minimum rates for those workers in Sectors 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7. See the new minimums for those in Sector 6 (car dealers) on page 5)
