Since the beginning of the year, a number of trade unions and other civil society organisations such as the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa), Solidarity, United Association of South Africa (UASA) and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu), Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee (SECC), Lesedi Community Forum, Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA), Rural Women’s Movement, Unemployed People’s Movement, Rural People’s Movement and the United Front (UF) which is a non-partisan coalition of trade unions and community groups; have been calling on government and Eskom to fix the electricity crisis.
Communities in Orlando West, Protea North, Chiawelo have been crying about high electricity tariffs. But nothing is being done! Eskom, business and government have a “war room” that is meant to come with solutions. But they are not talking to us – communities, consumers and workers.
We are subjected to loadshedding.and our power is cut. Now Eskom and municipalities are coming with prepaid meters. The government talks about privatising Eskom. Eskom says it will on June 5 cut-off seven of the remaining 10 defaulting municipalities.
Despite having increased tariffs by 252% over the last first years, Eskom is asking for 25,3% increase for the year 2015/2016. It looks as if we will go into winter with no electricity and power. Retrenchments and short-time will continue because of loadshedding and the cost of electricity.
Now is the time to act together and put our solutions to the electricity crisis. Come and say what needs to be done!!!
