Numsa press conference 24 February 2013 on High Court application and Medupi strike

Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim to address members of the media – Sunday 24 February 2013, Numsa Head Office, Newtown, Johannesburg

23 February 2013

In the next 48-hours, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) will go to the High Court on an urgent basis for an order that declares lawful the 18-hour picket that the union plans to hold from 18h00 on Wednesday 27 until 12h00 on Thursday 28 February outside the offices of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) in Pretoria.

For the last two weeks, Numsa has been negotiating without success with the South African Police Services (SAPS) and City of Tshwane Metropolitan Police Services to grant Numsa the permit for the picket.

An URGENT press conference to explain why Numsa is approaching the High Court as well as the reasons for the picket outside Nersa offices will be held at 12h00, tomorrow Sunday 24 February, at NUMSA’s Head Office, 153 Bree (Cnr Gerard Sekoto) Street, Newtown, Johannesburg, Gauteng province.

The Press Conference will be addressed by NUMSA General Secretary IRVIN JIM, President CEDRIC GINA, Deputy General Secretary KARL CLOETE, National Treasurer MPHUMZI MAQUNGO, 1st Deputy President ANDREW CHIRWA and 2nd Deputy President CHRISTINE OLIVIER. The details of the press conference are as follows:

DATE: Sunday 24 February 2013
TIME: 12H00
VENUE: NUMSA Head Office, 153 Bree (Cnr Gerard Sekoto) Streets, Newtown, Johannesburg, Gauteng province

The union will not remain idle when our hard-won constitutional right to gather or assemble or picket or protest is being flattened by the SAPS and Tshwane Metropolitan Police using apartheid legislation such as the National Key Points Act of 1980.

Members of the media are hereby invited to attend and report.
