Numsa meets big business

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) will be meeting with leaders of big business on Wednesday 13 February 2013, at Vincent Mabuyakhulu Conference Centre (VMCC), 155 Bree Street (Cnr Gerard Sekoto), Newtown, Johannesburg, Gauteng province.

The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss Eskom’s application to Nersa for 16% electricity tariff increases over five (5) years, and the consequences for our economy, particularly on job shedding, if the application is approved.

A high powered delegation from business will share with Numsa leadership its views, and hopefully develop a joint programme to fight this Eskom application.

“We know that some of our opponents are accusing us of being a proxy of business in rejecting this outrageous Eskom application. If truth be told, we are being asked to pay for failure to make timely decisions to build power stations and for a belief which elites religiously held in 1990’s and early 2000’s that the private sector through independent power producers (IPPs) will finance and provide new generation capacity. The unfortunate consequence of this application is that it will lead to massive job losses in the manufacturing sector, amidst the tragic crisis of poverty, unemployment and inequality facing our country”, says NUMSA Deputy General Secretary Karl Cloete.

Members of the media are invited to a photo opportunity and brief interviews at 12h00 (Wednesday 13 February 2013) and all interested journalists or media houses should confirm attendance with Numsa National Spokesperson Castro Ngobese, at 081 011 1137 or castro.ngobese@gmail.com, before 14h00pm, Tuesday 12 February 2013.
