Numsa leaders to picket outside gallagger Convention Centre during Nersa public hearing on Eskom's application to Nersa for increased Electricity tariffs

The National Office Bearers of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) – President CEDRIC GINA, General Secretary IRVIN JIM, Deputy General Secretary KARL CLOETE, 2ND Deputy President CHRISTINE OLIVIER and National Treasurer MPHUMZI MAQUNGO – will join a throng of workers and members of the public in a legal picket opposing Eskom’s application to Nersa for electricity hikes until 2018.

Buses and mini-buses have been organised to ferry workers across the province of Gauteng to picket outside the public hearing venue. The main roads leading to Midrand’s Gallagher Convention Centre will be swamped by workers in their traditional red t-shirts and placards, as part of exerting pressure on Nersa to reject this outrageous Eskom application.

A team of marshals will ensure that the proceedings are orderly and disciplined.

As Numsa we have taken a principled stance to reject this ridiculous application by Eskom, since it will have ominous consequences on our economy and will result to massive jobs losses, escalate food prices and the cost of living for the workers and the poor, amidst the triple crisis of poverty, unemployment and inequalities.

KARL CLOETE, Deputy General Secretary will make a submission on behalf of Numsa during the Nersa convened public hearing at Gallagher Estate.

Immediately after the conclusion of his submission, the National Office Bearers, joined by Cosatu and other affiliates will address workers and members of the public who will be picketing outside the hearing venue.

The details of the picket are as follows:

DATE           : 30 January 2013
TIME            : 10H00am
VENUE        : Gallagher Convention Centre, 19 Richard Drive Midrand, Gauteng province

Members of the media are hereby invited to attend and report.
