The 365 000 strong, militant, fighting, internationalist and class orientated National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) is holding its Central Committee (CC), 20 – 24 April 2015, Vincent Mabuyakhulu Conference Centre, Newtown, Johannesburg, Gauteng province.
The CC is attended by National Office Bearers (NOBs’), directly elected worker CC delegates and Regional Office Bearers (ROBs’).
The CC takes place against the backdrop of the ugly and inhumane xenophobic attacks directed towards foreign nationals. It takes place amidst the socio-economic misery, suffering, squalor and deprivation our poor and working class communities find themselves in as a result of the disastrous and failed neoliberal policies advanced by the fading ANC-government post the 1994 negotiated settlement. It also takes place post the illegal “expulsion” of Cosatu General Secretary cde Zwelinzima Vavi.
The political significance of this CC is the mandate it was bestowed by the groundbreaking 2013 Numsa Special National Congress resolutions, which called on Numsa to explore the formation of an independent political organ of the working class. This CC will make a final decision, as mandated by workers.
The NOBs’, namely General Secretary IRVIN JIM; President ANDREW CHIRWA; 1st Deputy President CHRISTINE OLIVIER; 2nd Deputy President BASIL CELE, National Treasurer MPHUMZI MAQUNGO, and Deputy General Secretary KARL CLOETE will address members of the media to publicly communicate the outcomes and decisions of the CC.
