On behalf of its 349 000 members, the National Union of Metalworkers (NUMSA) condemns the senseless and dastardly murder of Orlando Pirates Football Club and Bafana Bafana Captain Senzo “Nzori” Meyiwa.
Senzo was one of the brightest and outstanding football stars, not only for Pirates, but also for our rejuvenated Bafana Bafana under the tutelage of Coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba. His goalkeeping prowess and brilliance during the current AFCON qualifiers did not only restore our people’s trust and support for Bafana, but improved our rankings both in Africa and the world.
His tragic murder at the hands of the lumpen proletariat or rotten social scum is a big blow not only to his club Pirates but the whole country, especially the football fraternity, since Senzo was a national asset.
In the midst of rampant violent crime in working class and poor communities we need people’s power in action to safeguard our communities against these senseless killings.
We join his team, Pirates, in calling on all our people to desist from making ill-informed conclusions on the circumstances that led to Senzo’s murder. We pass our inestimable gratitude to his family for surrendering their son to entertain us with his glittering skills on the field of play. Surely, Senzo will be missed by the majority of soccer spectators; young kids in the dusty streets of our Apartheid created townships and slums who looked up to him as a role model, including those who came to know and appreciate his persona off-the-pitch.
To honour his memory and legacy, we call on our people, especially the workers and the poor of our country to build a “United Front” to reclaim our streets from the dangerous criminals that rob our people of their belongings and right to live in free and safe communities.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends and relatives, Pirates, all soccer loving people of our country.
To borrow a popular Nguni dictum “Isitsh’ esihle asidleli”.
