Numsa NEC to hold a Media briefing on the Engineering/Metals negotiations and mediation outcomes

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) invites members of the media to an urgent Media Briefing, TODAY Thursday 26 June 2014, at 11h30am, Protea Room, Parktonian Hotel, 120 De Korte Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg, Gauteng province.
The purpose of the Media Briefing is to publicly announce the NEC’s FINAL decision in relation to the Engineering/Metals sector negotiations and mediation outcomes. We had reached a deadlock with employer bodies – Steel and Engineering Industry Federation of South Africa 9SEIFSA) and National Employers Association of South Africa (NEASA) regarding the collective bargaining demands of workers.
The negotiations were held under the auspices of the Metal and Engineering Industry Bargaining Council (MEIBC), upon reaching a deadlock during the last round of the negotiations, an independent facilitator, was duly appointed to mediate, in order for the parties to reach a settlement.
The union represents more than 220 000 workers in this strategic layer of our country’s economy wherein more than 400 000 workers are employed. The metals and engineering sector is at the centre of most the strategic value chains in the economy, and is a significant contributor to the country’s GDP. NUMSA is currently holding a NEC meeting, which began this morning Wednesday 25 June 2014-ending-Friday 27 June 2014.
