TODAY Monday 17 March 2014, at 12h00 (midday), the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) will hold a press conference to announce nationwide plans for a national strike to highlight the issue of youth unemployment. The national strike takes place this week on Wednesday 19 March 2014.
Since the beginning of the year, Numsa has been building a broad coalition whose aim is to force government and employers to take concrete steps to address youth unemployment in South Africa. After protracted negotiations within the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC), Numsa has been granted the right to embark on a protected strike on the issue of youth unemployment. The union’s National Executive Committee (NEC) set Wednesday 19 March 2014 as the National Day of Action.
The Press Conference will be Numsa’s President Andrew Chirwa, 2nd Deputy President Basil Cele, General Secretary Irvin Jim and Deputy General Secretary Karl Cloete. Joining them is:
