Motor funds continue to pay surplusR3 a week for 6 years gave me R11 000!If you don’t believe that Mibco funds have already paid 40 000 motor workers their surplus, then just ask Numsa Wits Central West regional secretary, Sizwe Dlamini. From 1991 to 2003, Dlamini was employed at Wnyberg Panelbeaters. Up until about 1997 he belonged to the Autoworkers Pension Fund and his contribution was R3 a week.
Then he moved into the Autoworkers Provident Fund. When he heard of the surplus payouts he filled in his forms and sent them off with a copy of his ID document.“I received confirmation of receipt of my form by sms and was continually updated on the progress,†says Dlamini.“One day I looked at my account and saw this big deposit of R11 000 and I didn’t know what it was for! A little while later I received a statement explaining the R11 000! It was way more than I expected!â€
ChallengesMeanwhile, Elias Kubeka, Numsa motor sector coordinator says that only a few members who have submitted their claims have not been paid out.
Sometimes this is because members have given bank account numbers which are no longer working. This causes delays. Others send in the wrong ID numbers. In some cases, Mibco’s records have the incorrect ID.
This is why Kubeka says it is very important to send a copy of your ID with your application.Soon the first round of payouts will be closed. If you think you might be in line to receive a share of the surplus, contact your nearest Numsa office or MIFA on 011-561 9300. If you were a member, the money is yours – claim it!
REMEMBER: Who qualifies for surplus from Motor Industry Funds?* Any member of the Auto Workers Provident Fund, Motor Industry Provident Fund and Auto Workers Pension Fund (now called the Motor Industry Pension Fund 2005) who received a withdrawal benefit BEFORE 31 March 2004.
* Included in the above are those members that left and received a withdrawal benefit AND then started contributing to the Motor Industry again AFTER 1 April 2004.* NO-ONE ELSE QUALIFIES.* These three Funds: "old" Motor Industry Pension Fund; the MISA Pension Fund and the Copartes Pension Fund DO NOT gave any surplus for distribution.
Therefore, ANY previous contributing members to these 3 Funds DO NOT qualify in ANY way for surplus distribution.
Who does not qualify for surplus distribution?* any member, former or current, that falls under bullet point 4 above.* ANYONE that received a "Retirement" benefit at ANY time.* ANYONE that received a "Disability" benefit at ANY time.* ANY spouse, common-law-widow, customary widow, girlfriend or any other beneficiary/dependant that received a "death" benefit payment of any deceased member at ANY time.

The fund (MIBFA) has about 1,5 million former members that are entitled to a surplus payout. The fund has billions of rand waiting for former members. So far, only 100 000 members have submitted forms or contacted the call centre.
The fund cannot distribute the surplus to only 10 % of former members. The law says that after distributing the money to former members, thereafter it must be shared equally with the employers.
The biggest challenge is to find those missing members – tell your family, your friends, your community, especially in rural areas!Sam Tsiane, National Benefits Co-ordinator.
