NUMSA has today presented its case against unlawful and illegal retrenchments by General Motors South Africa.
Today in the Labour Court, Johannesburg the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) presented its case against unlawful and illegal retrenchments instituted by General Motors South Africa (GMSA), the worst of all employers in the entire industry.
The union is demanding that the wrongfully retrenched workers by GMSA must be reinstated; that there must be a moratorium placed on retrenchments at GMSA; and that GMSA must observe the rule of law by following procedures as laid out in the Labour Relations Act. This would lead to alternatives to retrenchments being agreed to with the union and implemented.
The union is now awaiting a ruling from the Labour Court by Wednesday 17 June 2009.
Meanwhile, we are preparing for a protracted strike as one of the ways by which GMSA will be made to understand the plight of the workers.
