Know your status and fight
Mirriam Makhalamele
History was written on February 24 when Numsa and the Solidarity Centre visited Graftech in Numsa's Sedibeng region to provide education on Aids and to encourage everyone to be tested. From 7am representatives of Numsa and the Solidarity Centre were there to pass on the message:
"If you love and protect them know your status and fight," the Solidarity Centre's Kuki Ndlovu told the workers. "Never trust anybody but yourself." Placards read "be faithful, be tested and unionised". Workers came one department after the other to be tested, black and white side by side.
Aids knows no colour, age or gender.Dwenarain Rajen, the company's human resources manger and the Numsa shop steward chairperson, Mohale Maake, took the lead in ensuring that this mission is accomplished. Maake lined up first to be tested followed by 116 other workers that tested that day.
This is regarded as a breakthrough in the company. The struggle against HIV/Aids has begun. The remaining workforce is scheduled to be tested on a later date. A number of other Numsa companies will also be covered in the joint project between Numsa and the Solidarity Centre.
