The metalworkers’ giant (Numsa) is to hold a three-day conference to map-out implementation of an all-inclusive, localized programme for job retention and sustainable employment opportunities.
Numsa’s four largest regions including Ekurhuleni, Wits Central Sedibeng and Tshwane, in conjunction with employers associations in the steel, motor component and engineering sectors will chart the way forward on how to implement the comprehensive jobs’ programme as follow up to the recent national job conference held last month.
The convention dubbed: “Turning crisis into advances for the working class” is scheduled for 23rd -26th April, 2009 at Eskom Conference Centre in Midrand.
Almost 200 delegates, including union shop stewards, officials, economists and researchers will be in attendance, while senior leaders from International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC), Trade Industrial Policy Strategies (Tips) will also speak on initiatives to counter dumping of Asian goods into the country and promoting fair trade in economic plenary discussions.
A mayoral panel including Johannesburg Metropolitan mayor Amos Masondo, Sedibeng mayor Mohale Mofokeng and Ekurhuleni metropolitan mayor Ntombi Mekgwe will set the national picture on plans to develop local economies, local procurements by municipalities, job creation and retention in the wake of global economic meltdown.
On the programme will also be international experience on the take over by workers of busted factories reminiscent of the recent workers’ invasion of bankrupt Argentinean industrial plants, will also be discussed.
Government ministries including Trade and Industry, Public Enterprises, labour and national public transport are expected to deliberate on how to protect and save existing jobs, urgently needed rescue packages for distressed economic sectors.
National Public Transport director general is also expected to deliver a paper on how to create jobs utilizing the national strategy on rebuilding bus coaches and bus rapid transport system.
