Motor

New motor rates From September 1 2008 all motor workers (except for petrol attendants) should have received their new increases as per the tables below.

The only workers that will not receive these increases from September are:* petrol attendants AND* those whose employers have applied for an exemption from paying the new rates.

Petrol attendantsIn the last Numsa News (August 2008 No 4) we said that all petrol attendants across the country would receive their new rates of pay from September 1 (ie R12.21 per hour).

However, petrol attendants will only receive their increase from October 1 and it will not be backdated. This is because government will only include the increased profit margin for petrol station owners in the October 1 petrol increase.

The agreement with employers says that the petrol attendants' increase is subject to when government grants this increase. Apologies for the confusion.

ExemptionsIf your employer wants to apply for an exemption s/he must:* do so by applying to the Motor Industries Bargaining Council (Mibco) before the end of September* find out your view on the issue* show financial proof of why they can't pay OR * show that if they pay the new rates they would have to retrench workers.

Regstelling (A)In die vorige uitgawe van Numsa News (Augustus 2008 No 4) het ons gesê dat alle petroljoggies regoor die land vanaf 1 September hulle nuwe loonvlakke (d.w.s. R12.21 per uur) sou ontvang. Petroljoggies sal hulle verhoging egter eers vanaf 1 Oktober ontvang.

ATM bombings – petrol attendants fear for their livesPeter Thobejane

The recent spate of ATM bombings in public places is sowing fear in the minds of Numsa petrol attendants."It's not easy to identify a criminal," say workers at Graydon Service Station.

The CCTV cameras installed at their workplaces "do not take away our fear!" they say, "we want urgent precautionary measures to be put in place for us."

They urged Numsa to revisit the legislation that declares service stations to be public areas not workplaces.

This law prevents workers in petrol stations from being covered by the Occupational Health and Safety Act nor the Compensation for Occupational Injuries Act.

Motor membership – systems explainedGaironisa FataarNumsa motor members in the Eastern Cape need not fear that their signed joining forms will be lost.
This is after a three day workshop held from 25-27 August took all Eastern Cape Administrators (Region and Local) facilitated by national motor membership administrator, Annie Manganye, through the administrative system for recording motor members and assigning them a union number.

This meeting was to educate all administrators on the MIBCO System: * to learn how to log in to the system, * to find out what is being done by the Regional Membership Administrator (RMA) in the Region, * to be shown how to capture such Numsa members and allocate them union numbers. We were also shown what to do when a member resigns from the union.

Manganye encouraged us to find out the reason as to his/her resignation and not just to accept the resignation of such member. From now on local administrators will collect all the forms in the Local and thereafter fill in the company control form, which they will send to the regional membership administrator (RMA) to capture on the system and allocate Union Numbers.

Thereafter the RMA will fax back the control form to the Local for filing purposes. All control forms will be filed alphabetically for easy reference and to draw monthly reports to the region and head office on motor membership.

Only the company control form will be sent to the RMA and the application forms will be kept on file in the Local Office. "If we had started with this process some years ago," said administrator in the region Albertina Matiwane, "we would have known our motor membership and the Eastern Cape Region would have remained the No. 1 Region when it comes to membership!"
