Regional office bearers elections completed

With regional and local office bearers now completed, all that remains is the election of the national office bearers at the Numsa National Congress in October 2008.

Caucuses delay start of Wits Central West regional congress
Liesbet Mohutsiwa

April 5 2008 was the day which was awaited with red eyes by all shop stewards. All the ways were to Saratoga at Braamfontein.

The congress was supposed to start at 9am but it only started about 11.30am because of different caucuses from different locals.Revolutionary songs were few, people seemed tired.

Four locals were already inside but Johannesburg Central and Johannesburg were still warming up with songs outside the hall. All 260 delegates were present dressed in red t-shirts, red caps and black bags with their congress packs inside. There were a few spoilt papers but the results of the elections were as follows:

Chairperson: M Ponya – 149 votes; J Mthimunye – 107 votes

Vice chair: M Tshambuluka – 134 votes; Mukaba – 123 votes

Secretary: Sizwe Dlamini – 142 votes; D Mdlalose – 111 votes

Treasurer: R Mhize – 146 votes; R Mhlongo – 109 votes

CC Delegate: J Makhubela – 147 votes; Mamabolo – 110 votes

Dealing with contested elections
In many regions, there have been contestations over positions. Numsa News spoke to Motsamai Phonya, Wits Central West's re-elected chairperson to find out what his region is doing to rebuild the region after the elections.

In your region, there were representatives from two different slates standing for election. How are you dealing with this going forward?
We called an urgent extended Regional Executive Committee from April 16 to 18. We invited the old regional office bearers as well as the new ones and including the staff of the region. We wanted to try and come to a common understanding moving forward as the region.

Why is this?
There were different ideologies attached to the different representatives standing. We wanted everybody to be open with each other. After this we would hopefully come with a way forward.

What is the biggest priority?
The first priority is to bring back service to our members. If we can come up with a plan to do this, then this will address the other problems.

Who is the biggest local of them all? How does your Local rate in the size game?
Port Elizabeth local easily outstrips all the locals. In fact it is almost three times the size of the whole Northern Cape region!

Membership – Who will win the race?

The race is on to see who will have the most members and so who will be allowed to take the biggest number of delegates to the Numsa National Congress in October this year. Just a year ago it was Hlanganani that was in the lead. But now Eastern Cape and Wits Central West have overtaken them and Hlanganani has fallen back to third place. But just like the July Handicap, anything can happen on the last leg. There is not much difference between the first three front-runners. But could an outsider come in and take up poll position?
