R3.46 For more than two years Numsa has been negotiating with employer bodies, the Fuel Retailers Association (FRA) and the Retail Motor Industry (RMI) on the motor medical aid scheme – Automed.
Numsa wanted to make it affordable, voluntary and increase the membership of the scheme.
“Automed was at first compulsory for Numsa members employed by FRA or RMI employers,” says Elias ‘Stout’ Kubeka, Wits Central West regional motor sector coordinator.
But the problem was that although the scheme was cheap compared to other medical schemes, “Numsa wanted to make it even cheaper because of the starvation wages paid to petrol attendants.”.

There were only three plans to choose from and their names were “not appropriate” he said. The cheapest plan was called “Lower plan” which made people feel “belittled”.
The scheme is now open to any worker in the motor industry and Automed has appointed a team of people to “recruit and service members of the medical aid scheme,” says Automed board member and Numsa shop steward Themba Mkhabela.
Workers now have a choice of five plans with new names that do not reflect the level of contributions. (Names in brackets are the old names)

Numsa het onderhandelings omtrent die vernuwing van Automed, die mediese fonds vir motorwerkers, suksesvol afgehandel.
Die skema is nou vrywillig, is oop vir enige werker in die motorbedryf, en is meer bekostigbaar.
Werkers kan nou kies tussen vyf planne met nuwe name wat nie die vlak van bydrae weerspieí«l nie. (Name in hakies is die ou name)
