The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), officially the biggest affiliate of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), representing a solid membership of 320 000, will kick-off Nelson Mandela Day activities as from tomorrow Thursday 18 July 2013.
Numsa leadership, including our general members will be embarking on a series of events in honour of our revolutionary icon and chief architect of our democracy comrade President Nelson Mandela, as part of celebrating not only his 67 years of service to the African National Congress (ANC) and the people of South Africa, but his 95 years of great and exemplary life.
President Mandela continues to occupy a special place in the hearts of Metalworkers, and his name is engraved in gold plates in our scars as we fight and struggle to improve the conditions of the workers and the poor. President Mandela’s glittering life personifies the finest traditions of our movement, the ANC, of selflessness, dedication and commitment.
Although the imperatives of nature have consigned President Mandela to a hospital bed, but we should use his special birthday to forge maximum unity within his movement and march forward in our collective struggle to build a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and prosperous South Africa, free of exploitation from one man by another.
