Numsa congratulates Num president Senzeni Zokwana on his re-election as ICEM president.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), the reliable and trusted ally of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), congratulates Cde Senzeni Zokwana, President of NUM and a member of PolitBuro (PB) of our vanguard party of the working class and insurance guarantor for Socialism, the SACP, on his re-election as President of International Chemical, Energy and Mineworkers and General Workers Union, ICEM.

Cde Zokwana was re-elected as ICEM President during its Congress held on the 24 – 26 November 2011, Buenos Aires, Argentina, the country of birth of world’s revered revolutionary martyr and great symbol of internationalism Cde Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara.

The re-election of Cde Zokwana affirms South Africa’s trade union movement leading role in building worker-to-worker contact and internationalist solidarity in the world as led by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU).

His re-election is a further proof of the sterling contribution played by South African trade unionists and Communists alike in forging unity of the working class in the world such as Comrades Moses Kotane, Moses Mabhida, Michael Harmel and other great departed stalwarts of the trade union movement in South Africa.

This re-election of Cde Zokwana lays a solid foundation for COSATU and its Affiliates to renew its historical ties with the workers of the world as led by our class conscious and Socialist orientated allies in the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) amidst the deepening crisis of Capitalism in Europe and the United States (US).

It was through the unprecedented support of the WFTU with the help of the SACP that our struggle against apartheid was elevated at a international scale and strong contacts were established for the African National Congress (ANC) to pursue the liberation struggle in exile.

The ongoing global crisis of Capitalism in Europe and ousting of dictatorial regimes by the workers and the poor of Africa is a living proof that a better and alternative world is indeed possible.

The militant and class conscious members of NUMSA wishes Cde Zokwana luck in his leadership role in ICEM.
