Media Invitation to the Numsa 9th National Congress: 4 – 8 June 2012, Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) Durban, Ethekwini Municipality, Kwazulu-Natal Province 17 April 2012

The NATIONAL UNION OF METALWORKERS OF SOUTH AFRICA (NUMSA) will be holding its 9th National Congress from 4th – 8th June 2012, at iNkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC), Durban, eThekwini Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal.

The 9th National Congress will be preceded by NUMSA’s 25th Anniversary Rally taking place on the 3rd June 2012, at Curries Fountain Stadium, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The National Congress is the highest decision making body in the Union. The National Congress will be held under the strategic theme “25 years of militant struggle for Decent Jobs, Benefits, National Liberation and for Socialism”.

The main mandate of the National Congress is to account on the progress made on the implementation of resolutions and programmes since the 8th National Congress held in 2008, and the Mini National Congress in 2009.

The National Congress will also elect new National Office Bearers (NOB) to drive the work of the union for the next four years. This congress will be attended by 1000 elected delegates from lower structures of the union, invited international fraternal organisations, Alliance partners, Cabinet Ministers and other guests.

As is customary the 9th National Congress will be officially opened by the NUMSA President CEDRIC GINA, which will be followed by Special Messages of Support from World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) and International Metalworkers Federation (IMF).

The ANC, SACP, SANCO and COSATU national leadership will also salute and address the 9th National Congress during separate daythe congress. A detailed and composite Programme for the National Congress will be circulated to the media after the last Central Committee (CC) of NUMSA on 22-23 May 2012, the 25th Anniversary Month of NUMSA.

Members of the media are hereby asked to confirm their attendance to cover and report on this watershed National Congress of the biggest Metalworkers and class orientated trade union in South Africa and Africa broadly.
