A 23 year- old metalworker was crushed to death after a newly- built trailer collapsed on him in a freak accident at the trailer manufacturing.
Other colleagues frantically dragged the corpse of the young welder trapped under the 200-ton trailer which collapsed on him, smashing his body into smothering as police dashed to the scene.
Samson Legodi was pronounced dead before he was completely removed from the crash scene and rushed to hospital. The accident happened just before lunch-hour break in Pretoria’s Rosslyn industrial area last Friday.
Legodi had reportedly just finished welding the trailer when the straps fastening the trailer to the frame above him snapped in the spur of a moment. It is reportedly the second fatal incident since March this year at Van Dewetering trailer manufacturing workshop in Pretoria.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa is extremely displeased that safety lapses occur persistently in the company without the Department of Labour taking strong and corrective measures against the management.
Numsa officials were also surprised after reporting the incident to the labour inspectors, to notice that they arrived four to five hours late and displayed tardiness in assessing the incident.
