About 900 employers owe about R52 million on workers’ subscription contributions to Numsa as well as bargaining council dues.

As a result thousands of Numsa members, who are also covered by the union’s funeral policy scheme, have fallen into two or three years’ arrears.

Nevertheless, Numsa’s national legal officer Booysen Mashego has warned that these companies are responsible for settling these workers’ funeral claims should a family member die.

Out of a total of 4352 motor, electrical and engineering companies which paid employees’ subscriptions directly in to the union account, 900 were found to have defaulted on payments over the past three years.

Already a number of companies have been issued with summonses to appear in court for failing to transfer their workers’ union subscriptions to the union.

Two small engineering companies, Lafron Plating and Infast Tools are among several defaulting companies who have been summoned to court for non-payment.

Mashego said the union had been battling to collect workers’ subscriptions from Lafron in Industria since 2004 but management refused to cooperate with the union. Numsa is also demanding that the company pay the interest on R15 157 owed for each year.

Infast Tools in Cleveland had deducted monies from Numsa members since March 2003 but had allegedly failed to pay the dues over to the union up to this day.

Other engineering companies were fraudulently deducting workers’ weekly union contributions, and then depositing the funds into separate slush accounts to accumulate interest. They only paid the amounts across to the union after the union issued letters of demand but without the accumulated interest.

“It’s a ghoulish, sick situation,” said Thulani Mthiyane, Numsa’s engineering sector coordinator.
