In 2004, the Chief Executive Officer of the Numsa Investment Company [NIC], Tony Kgobe, told delegates at Numsa’s 7th National Congress that R5 million would be made available to establish a bursary scheme.
What is a bursary?A bursary is financial assistance given to a student for further study or training. Some bursaries require you to work for the company that gave you the bursary after you finish studying. Although this may put you off, there are thousands of unemployed graduates without any job experience, so having a place to work after you have finished studying, could be to your advantage.
If you want to register at a university and you don’t have sufficient funds, make sure you visit the Student Financial Aid Office of the University at which you are registering. They provide loans or bursaries from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme [NSFAS].
The NSFAS is a government initiative supported by the private sector.
The scheme would be for Numsa members’ and staff and their children and dependants. Since then the amount has grown to R8 million.
The NIC has recently employed the services of a Bursary Scheme Administrator [BSA]. She is in the process of finalising the application form and the criteria for selection. These forms will be sent to Numsa regions around May/June 2006. Prospective candidates will then be invited to send in their applications.
The scheme will be open to learners from Grade 10 upwards including students wanting to study at tertiary institutions. It will allocate bursaries according to the percentage of the membership in Numsa’s regions. This will give an equal chance for all Numsa members and their dependants to have access to the fund.
Other issues the trustees will consider are:
providing bursaries in areas where there are skill deficiencies
giving preference to applicants with maths and science
allocating bursaries so that the scheme is sustained.
“Ultimately the board of trustees will decide on the total numbers as well as the criteria for selection,” says Kgobe. The Numsa Investment Company was established in 1997 with a loan of R300 000 from Numsa, after the National Executive Committee in 1996 resolved to establish an investment company so as to improve benefits to members.
Dear Numsa NewsIt is good to see other Unions doing something very imperative for their members and dependants. However kindly please find out how far Cde Tony Kgobe is in terms of getting bursaries for Numsa members and dependants and communicate that to us please because other opposition unions are using bursaries that their unions have as a strategy to recruit our members.
