I think we should always remember that whenever there is fallout between workers (s/s included) and the union official, the first line of complaint should be at the local office. Arrange to meet formally with the local office bearers and get your problems sorted out there and then.
In some regions, there are locals that have special days dedicated to discussing factory problems, apart from the ordinary shop steward councils.
And in others, there is what is known as the Local Dispute Committees (LDCs). LDCs are structures in the local that deal with problems that members encounter at their workplaces. They advise you to declare a dispute or maybe take the problem to a monthly management/shop steward meeting or to the factory general meeting for that matter.
But they are also capable of re-routing your problem as they see fit.
So it is not all gloom and doom but it is your duty as a member in this union to exhaust all these channels optimally and start owning this union. You don’t have to sit on a problem for a long time, because some concerns by workers are time-bound. For the mere fact that you spoke to an organiser and he has not solved your problem that on its own constitutes a problem .
So my advice – arrange a meeting with the Klerksdorp local office bearers and if you have a LDC, raise the problem there as well.
We write this letter as the Macsteel Klerksdorp workers complaining about our local organiser Gcina Mkhokheli. Now is about two years we try to work together with our organiser and we write to him two letters trying to talk with him about his poor service. Even when we have a general meeting, we try to organise him as the organiser, he doesn’t pitch. Even last year on December 17 we were holding wage negotiations you won’t believe that he was almost 30 minutes late. He then told us he was on honeymoon in Durban . He also loses cases that are very poor (simple), if CCMA put out the date of cases the member himself must go and collect that date. There are many that organiser always do, he always has family problems. Now we as the workers we ask the union for another organiser, ka kopo.

I was working in Canopy Workshop CC for six years. On the February 7 2005 I was fired in a bad manner with a case that I did not commit eg. scandal case. Since 2001 I’ve been working under full of oppression at work and I did report my problem but nothing was happening about it. Today I am down and out.
A company boss sends a shop steward to do a driver’s licence and these shop stewards received side cash directly to the white boss. In fact he already sold us out. All comrades in the factory do not trust this shop steward. Cde, I became a union member from 2001 to 2005. I’ve been paying fees per week. Since 2002 up to 2005 the company deducted R34,36 per week for provident funds but on the 3 rd Feb 05 after I’ve been fired I went to check my money I found nothing. As for the allegations, I think it would be wise to make such allegations backing them up with some proof. It will not help your cause to just make wild allegations for which you don’t have supporting proof. Don’t wait for a problem to rear its ugly head, snub it in the bud whilst there’s still time. She will request the very first statements (1996) that were sent to contributors to be sent to you. These statements should reflect the amount that you carried over to the provident fund from the pension fund.
