Engineering: Engineering’s unfinished business

As part of its engineering sector demands last year, Numsa proposed that employers increase:

the shift allowance
the standby allowance
severance pay
leave to 20 days.

But the initial response from Seifsa, the employers’ organisation, was No! No! No!

Now Seifsa has proposed holding a smaller meeting with Numsa and other unions. Judging from Seifsa’s response in the negotiations, indications are that it will not change its position.

“If you want to win these demands, you must be prepared to go on strike,” warns Numsa engineering sector co-ordinator, Thulani Mthiyane.

Now the big questions that Numsa’s membership must respond to are:

when do we table these demands with employers?
are you prepared to go on strike?

Whatever we decide, one thing is clear, you on the ground must be prepared.
