Negotiations: HIV/AIDS blitz

HIV/Aids is top of Sactwu's agenda which is why it blitzed more than 32 000 of its members from mid-April to mid-May.

Specially trained Sactwu shop stewards conducted lunch-time briefing sessions at 126 factories across the country "on the causes of HIV/Aids, the steps that can be taken to combat the disease, where to get help if they are affected, infected or want to determine their HIV status," says Sactwu deputy general secretary, Andre Kriel.

The union also distributed 70 000 HIV/Aids information pamphlets and more than 25 000 male and female condoms.

The Aids awareness training for workers follows the training of more than 1800 shop stewards on AIDS awareness. Sactwu is also preparing to provide home-based care for union members that have Aids.
