Numsa's funeral benefit fund

As soon as you join Numsa and pay your first subscription, you automatically become a member of the Numsa Funeral Benefit Fund. You stay a member for as long as you continue paying your subscriptions.

From April 12007, Numsa members will no longer belong to Lesaka funeral scheme. They will now be members of the Doves funeral scheme. Numsa members must contact Doves [0860 11 22 88] not Lesaka for any deaths that occur after this date. All deaths up until March 31 must be claimed from Lesaka [Contact 0861 520 520].

Numsa funeral scheme administered by Doves

From April 1 2007, Numsa members will belong to the Doves funeral scheme. Numsa members must contact Doves not Lesaka for any deaths that occur after this date. Mdu Ntuli and Mncedisi Phaphu spoke to Philemon Shiburi, Numsa national treasurer and Cedric Gina, Numsa second vice president, to find out why the union has changed funeral schemes

Why did Numsa change to Doves? Lesaka did not have a funeral service. It only administered the service for Numsa members. When Numsa’s investment company [NIC] bought 100% of Doves it was wise for us to move to Doves so that it could provide members with a 100% fully owned funeral service.

What will Doves provide now? It will provide a full funeral service.

If a member has existing cover for example through a provident fund or another private fund what will happen? We will encourage members to use Doves to provide the funeral service and to use the cash from membership of other funeral schemes to top this up. If a member chooses not to use Dove’s funeral service they can get a cash payout of R2000 for the death of yourself or your spouse and R500 for the death of each dependant child.

Who is covered by this new benefit?

The primary Numsa member, spouse and his / her children are covered. This is just as before. What about members who had taken out extra cover from Lesaka for their extended family and for other services from Lesaka? These will remain with Lesaka.

Will I pay any more for this benefit? No. It is just as before. Numsa will take the money for the funeral scheme from the union subscription that you pay to the union each month.

Toe Numsa se beleggingsmaatskappy [NBM] 100% van Doves gekoop het, was dit wys vir ons om na Doves toe oor te skakel sodat ons vir lede ‘n begrafnisskema kon lewer wat 100% aan ons behoort.

Wat sal Doves nou aanbied? Doves sal ‘n volle begrafnisdiens aanbied.

Wat sal gebeur as ‘n lid bestaande dekking het, byvoorbeeld by ‘n voorsorgfonds of ‘n ander private fonds? Ons sal lede aanmoedig om Doves te gebruik om die begrafnisdiens te lewer, en om die kontant uit ander begrafnisskemas te gebruik om enige tekorte aan te vul.

Wie word deur die nuwe voordeel gedek? Die hoof Numsa-lid, sy/haar lewensmaat en sy/haar kinders word gedek. Dit bly net soos in die verlede.

Wat word van lede wat ekstra dekking by Lesaka uitgeneem het vir ander familie en vir ander van Lesaka se dienste? Hulle sal by Lesaka bly.

Sal ek meer betaal vir hierdie voordeel? Nee. Dit werk net soos in die verlede. Numsa sal die geld vir die begrafnisskema aftrek by die subskripsie wat jy elke maand aan die vakbond betaal.

The application form for the Mbuyi Ngwenda Bursary Fund is now available!

RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS

• This form must be completed by a dependant of NUMSA member or staff member.
• The bursary will be granted for full time studies at a recognized institution within the Republic of South Africa.
• Grade 12 pupils and undergraduate students who would like to study full time or currently studying fulltime at a recognized South African Institution may apply.
• Grade 12 must be in possession of symbol C in Higher Grade, Mathematics and Physical Science or Accounting to apply for a Degree and Symbol D in Higher Grade in Mathematics and Physical Science to apply for a Diploma.
• Financial need will be taken into consideration and applicants are required to attach pay slips [for both parents].
• This application form must be accompanied by certified copies of academic records. Failing which the application will be disqualified.
• Bursaries will only be allocated for the year following the year in which the application is received and only successful applicants will be notified in writing.
• The closing date for the application form will be the 30 September annually and late applications will not be accepted.
• An applicant who is found to have submitted false information will automatically be disqualified from being considered for a bursary.
